One key element
in any project that is regularly overlooked is the after project celebration. As
odd as it sounds, this critical part of project closeout should be addressed
early in the project and the costs should be included in the approved budget.
When the project is winding down, it is too late to get any real funding for a
party. Planning the celebration can be a great team building tool as well as
morale builder. On a difficult project or one that covers an extended period of
time, giving people something to look forward to is critical.
When working with complex projects like Business Continuity, efforts to show
appreciation throughout the project are essential success factors. Special polo
shirts for your team sets them apart from everyone else at the beginning of a
project. Cookouts and half days at the lake help people blow off steam and
reduce stress partway through a project. Coupons for Dinner For Two (at a GOOD
restaurant) tell an employee you appreciate the sacrifices they have made being
away from their families as well.
I have a collection of coffee cups from projects I have worked on over the
years. Nothing shows how little you value your employees like an $8 coffee cup
or a left over trade show giveaway. Including this simple line item (team
building) in your budget can boost productivity and reduce turnover.
